Onko yhdistysten nykyinen toiminta-avustusmalli ajantasalla?

TÀmÀn vuoden suuri projekti AYY:n jÀrjestösektorilla on yhdistysten toiminta-avustusten pistemallin uudistaminen. NykyÀÀn kÀytetty malli on tehty vuonna 2010 ylioppilaskuntien yhdistyessÀ Helsingin yliopiston ylioppilaskunnan mallin pohjalta. Mallia on sen jÀlkeen tarkennettu hieman vuonna 2011, ilman suurempia muutoksia. Yhteisömme kehittyy kuitenkin jatkuvasti ja sen takia tahdomme pohtia toiminta-avustuksia tarkemmin. Vuodelle 2014 toiminta-avustuksia on budjetoitu 94 500 euroa, joka on merkittÀvÀ summa AYY:n budjetista.

AYY:n yhdistysrekisteriin on kirjattu yli 200 yhdistystÀ. YhdistyksiÀ löytyy laidasta laitaan pienistÀ kymmenen jÀsenen harrastusyhdistyksistÀ yli 500 henkeÀ tavoittaviin, opintosuuntaa edustaviin yhdistyksiin. Yhdistysten toiminta hyvin erilaista; osa harrastaa viikottain jalkapalloa, osa kÀy pelaamassa roolipelejÀ, toiset tukevat start-up toimintaa. Uusia yhdistyksiÀ syntyy vuosittain useita ja vaikka osa yhdistyksistÀ lopettaa toimintansa, on trendi silti ollut kasvava.

Maaliskuun ajan on kÀynnissÀ AYY:n toiminta-avustushaku ja osalla yhdistyksistÀ tÀmÀ tuki on huomattavan merkittÀvÀ osa jatkuvaa toimintaa. Avustusten summat vaihtelevat 100 eurosta vajaaseen 2000 euroon riippuen yhdistyksen koosta, toiminnan kattavuudesta, mÀÀrÀstÀ ja monipuolisuudesta sekÀ sen vastuullisuudesta.

KÀytössÀ olevaan pisteytysmalliin voi tutustua /wp-content/uploads/Pisteytysmalli_2012.pdf). Lyhyesti pisteytys tapahtuu seuraavanlaisen ohjauksen mukaan:

– Yhdistyksen koko (20 p)

– Toiminnan mÀÀrĂ€ (40 p)

– Toiminnan monipuolisuus (20 p)

– Toiminnan kattavuus (15 p)

– Toiminnan vastuullisuus (5 p)

Kyseinen malli on hyvin neutraali, eikÀ ohjaa suoranaisesti yhdistysten toimintaa tai ota konkreettisesti moraalista kantaa niiden toimintaan. MietinnÀn alla onkin muu muassa se, tulisiko toiminta-avustuksilla pyrkiÀ ohjaamaan yhdistyksiÀ suurempaan vastuullisuuteen esimerkiksi taloudenpidossa tai kannustaa AYY:n linjojen mukaiseen toimintaan, esimerkiksi kansainvÀlisyyden edistÀmiseen. PitÀisikö huomioida, miten yhdistyksen toiminta tukee AYY:n omia tavoitteita? Miten sinun mielestÀ AYY:n tulisi tukea yhdistysten toimintaa? Onko nykyinen malli hyvÀ, puuttuuko siitÀ jotain tai pitÀisikö jotain kohtia painottaa enemmÀn? Palautetta ja ehdotuksia voi laittaa AYY:n jÀrjestösektorille jarjestoasiat@ayy.fi.

LinnanisÀntÀ, mikÀ se on?

Tiesitkö, ettĂ€ kaikissa AYY:n omistamissa TeekkarikylĂ€n ja suurimmassa osassa Helsingin asuinrakennuksissa toimii linnanisĂ€ntĂ€? EntĂ€ tunnetko oman linnanisĂ€ntĂ€si? Tuttavallisemmin linnanisĂ€nnĂ€t tunnetaan “linniksinĂ€â€, jotka availevat ovia itsensĂ€ ulos lukinneille opiskelijoille ja puuttuvat asukkaita hĂ€iritsevÀÀn möykkÀÀmiseen. Monille asukkaille oma linnanisĂ€ntĂ€ jÀÀkin vain talon ilmoitustaululta löytyvĂ€ksi yhteystietolappuseksi tĂ€llaisten tapausten varalta, mutta todellisuudessa nuo palvelut muodostavat vain pienen osan linniksen arjesta. Kuka se semmoinen linnanisĂ€ntĂ€ siis on, ja mitĂ€ se oikein tekee?

AYY ei ole turhaan pÀÀtynyt yllĂ€pitĂ€mÀÀn linnisjĂ€rjestelmÀÀ, sillĂ€ nĂ€illĂ€ asukkaiden ja ylioppilaskunnan vĂ€lisillĂ€ yhteyshenkilöillĂ€ on tĂ€rkeĂ€ merkitys AYY:n opiskelija-asumiselle. LinnanisĂ€nnĂ€t valvovat talonsa asukkaiden etuja, pitĂ€vĂ€t yllĂ€ jĂ€rjestystĂ€ ja huolehtivat rakennuksen kunnosta – toisin sanoen he tekevĂ€t asumisesta mukavampaa ja helpompaa, sekĂ€ joskus jopa turvallisempaa. Ylioppilaskunnan kannalta linnanisĂ€ntien tĂ€rkein tehtĂ€vĂ€ ovat kuukausittain tehtĂ€vĂ€t talokierrokset, joissa tarkastetaan ja raportoidaan kiinteistön vioista ja puutteista sekĂ€ AYY:lle ettĂ€ talon huoltoyhtiölle. NĂ€in taloon saadaan pieniĂ€ huoltotoimenpiteitĂ€ talon kunnon yllĂ€pitĂ€miseksi, ja mikĂ€ tĂ€rkeĂ€mpÀÀ, estetÀÀn suurempien ongelmien kehittyminen heti alkuunsa. Talokierroksillaan linnanisĂ€ntĂ€ myös huolehtii paloturvallisuudesta ja voi merkitĂ€ luvattoman palokuorman siirrettĂ€vĂ€ksi pois esimerkiksi rappukĂ€ytĂ€vistĂ€.

Innokas linnanisÀntÀ voi tarjota huolehtimalleen talolle myös paljon muuta. Monilla taloilla on esimerkiksi omat Facebook-ryhmÀnsÀ helpottamaan taloyhteisön vÀlistÀ viestintÀÀ. Oma-aloitteisuudelle on myös mahdollisuus, sillÀ jokaisella talolla on omakohtainen vuosittainen budjetti erilaisten projektien toteuttamiseksi. Talon asukkaat voivat esimerkiksi jÀrjestÀÀ yhdessÀ talkoot, grillibileet tai hankkia jotain yhteistÀ talon tiloihin. Talokohtaisen toiminnan suunnittelussa, toteuttamisessa ja organisoinnissa linniksellÀ voi olla apuna talon asukkaista koostuva asukasneuvosto, johon voivat hakea kaikki talossa asuvat vÀhintÀÀn 18-vuotiaat. Kaikissa taloissa ei tÀnÀ vuonna asukasneuvostoa ole, mutta voit olla myös suoraan yhteydessÀ linnikseesi jos keksit hyvÀn idean tapahtumalle tai projektille. Linnis varmasti ottaa kaikki ehdotukset ilolla vastaan ja arvostaa myös apuasi ideoiden toteutuksessa.

LinniksenĂ€ toimiminen tuo arkeen mukavasti lisĂ€vĂ€riĂ€ eikĂ€ useampi toimikausikaan ole mahdottomuus, mikĂ€li intoa ja aikaa riittÀÀ. TĂ€mĂ€n vuoden linniksistĂ€ kokeneimmalla onkin menossa jo kuudes vuosi talonsa linniksenĂ€. Mutta miksi joku haluaa toimia linniksenĂ€, kun kyse on vain muiden hyvĂ€ksi toimimisesta ilman suurta glooriaa? Kysymys sisĂ€lsikin vastauksen jo itseensĂ€. Linniksen toimessa parhaat muistot jÀÀvĂ€t niistĂ€ hetkistĂ€, kun omalla toiminnallaan voi tuottaa toiselle hyvĂ€n mielen. RappukĂ€ytĂ€vĂ€stĂ€ kotiin pÀÀstetyn asukkaan sanoma “Kiitos!” saa linniksen pĂ€ivÀÀn positiivista nostetta, ja yhteisestĂ€ viihtyvyydestĂ€ huolehtiminen tuo aina hyvĂ€n mielen. Linniksen arjessa pÀÀsee joskus myös todistamaan elĂ€mĂ€n koomisia hetkiĂ€ ja esimerkiksi vapauttamaan oravan tai pikkulinnun, joka on eksynyt talon sisĂ€puolelle.

TÀnÀ vuonna TeekkarikylÀssÀ palattiin sen alkuvuosikymmenten toimintamalliin, kun KylÀsenaatti muodostettiin talojen linnanisÀnnistÀ. KylÀsenaatissa eri talojen linnikset lyövÀt voimansa yhteen kehittÀÀkseen asumisviihtyvyyttÀ koko TeekkarikylÀn tasolla. TÀmÀn lisÀksi senaattitoiminta tarjoaa linnikselle yhteisöllisyyttÀ, vertaistukea ja kanssatoimijoita, joiden kanssa viettÀÀ kokemuksien tÀyteinen vuosi kylÀÀ ja sen asukkaita palvellen. Asumisviihtyvyyden lisÀksi KylÀsenaatti vastaa myös TeekkarikylÀn vuosikymmenten perinteiden yllÀpidosta, kuten Wappuriehan julistuksesta ja KukanpÀivÀn viestistÀ.

LinnanisÀntÀ on siis jokaisen AYY:n talossa asuvan yhdysside oman asuinrakennuksen sekÀ koko ylioppilaskunnan asumisen kehittÀmiseen. TeekkarikylÀssÀ asuville linnis on myös lÀhin yhteys KylÀsenaattiin ja koko kylÀn viihtyvyyden parantamiseen. On hyvÀ muistaa, ettÀ ylioppilaskunnan jÀseninÀ me kaikki olemme AYY:n talojen omistajia sekÀ asumisen vaikuttajia, ja linnanisÀnnÀt ovat olemassa juuri kaikkien yhteisen hyvÀn ajamisen helpottamiseksi.

WHY DO I DO?

Fortunately, the Equal Marriage Act is once again being debated. In AYY, this became visible already on 20 Feb, when the citizens’ initiative was submitted to the Parliament for consideration. On that day, the student unions across Finland posted love-themed images to social media, which were marked with the hashtag #rakkauskuuluukaikille (lovebelongstoeveryone).

In addition, AYY started a card campaign one week ago, in which students can write their greetings in favour of the Equal Marriage Act to a member of parliament of their choice. AYY collects the cards and delivers them to the members of parliament. As expected, the card campaign has been a small and significant way of influence and a much talked about topic.

Along with the card campaign, questions have been raised in relation to AYY’s role as an organisation which has influence and prepares statements. Aalto University Student Union’s strategy, approved in the Representative Council meeting 12/2012, determines four organisation principles, one of which is ”AYY as an influencer”. AYY wants to be a responsible and social actor, which ”also raises difficult social problems and offers daring solutions for them”. On this basis, the Board has decided to participate in Tahdon2013 campaign in the year of 2013. AYY wishes that all Finnish citizens are equal before the law and that is why we openly present our view.

One of the most popular questions related to the card campaign seems to be why AYY uses its resources to such non-core activities. The card campaign took approximately five of AYY’s personnel hours. This is quite a small percentage of the personnel hours of a single week, let alone the personnel hours of an entire year.

In addition, in AYY’s viewpoint it is sometimes important to implement small projects, which are related to the acknowledgment of the special needs of minority groups (e.g. students with families, adult students). The card campaign is this kind of a small project. Also, the reality is that AYY’s employees, board and volunteers mainly focus on core activities, such as the promotion of better studies and student life, the so-called ”invisible work”.

Hopefully, the previously mentioned issues answered even some of the questions raised. Finally, I could summarise the main idea, which is hopefully endorsed by everyone: our students deserve fair and equal treatment.

Greetings from the International Section Mosaic!

Our student union appears to everyone in a different way. For some, it appears as an organisation which provides housing, for others it means advocacy work in our Aalto community. Some think about the student union’s support for our diverse association field. Rarely, however, we think about the international aspect. Our university is very international and we have plenty of international students. Many Aalto students travel abroad for exchange studies. The activities of our student union are also international. Many sub-associations have active international students and some associations provide the Finnish students with opportunities to become international. Our student union also keeps in touch with student unions in other countries and has influence on education policy across the borders.

What is Mosaic then? It is the international section of our student union. The mission of the section is to organise international events both for the Finnish and international students. It also organises Café Linguas, for example, where you can discover new languages and cultures. Mosaic also organises World Dinner 1-2 times per year, where you can explore dishes from various countries. You may also have participated in MP3 Experience, which brings people together, regardless of their nationality. Mosaic is also responsible for bringing together all international students operating within the student union, which mainly takes place in an international super meeting twice a year. For this year, Mosaic has also planned completely new events that have not been seen before.

At the moment, six people are involved in Mosaic, two of whom are international students. However, everyone has the desire to work internationally and get to know international people. This year, we have organised two Café Linguas and checkpoints on Winter Day and JÀmerÀnjÀlki. Together we have made plans for the spring and for the autumn to some extent. However, we do not only implement events but we also have leisure activities. We have spent evenings together and cooked tasty food, such as Chinese dumplings. Currently, our group is still small. If you are interested in international activities, you can still get involved and organise events or possibly even develop something completely new. In this case, you may contact the undersigned.

Millaisella videolla sinun AYY:si esittÀytyy?

IÀnikuiset kysymykset kuuluvat muun muassa seuraavasti: MitÀ ylioppilaskunta tekee? MikÀ ylioppilaskunta on? MitÀ eroa on yliopistolla ja ylioppilaskunnalla? AYY yrittÀÀ vastata toiminnallaan ja viestinnÀllÀÀn nÀihin kysymyksiin parhaansa mukaan.

I was still struggling with my thesis in a poorly ventilated classroom in the middle of May, when a job opportunity came up. I had stumbled upon a marketing intern job posted by Tieto, which offered the possibility to work in two cities, Helsinki and Stockholm. Having lived in both cities for many years, this was an opportunity to work in both cities I consider home. While I originally hadn’t planned to start working until after my graduation, I knew that this was an opportunity too good to pass up.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I was now working as a marketeer (intern) for Tieto’s Financial Services industry group. Right from the start another intern and I were assigned responsibility for managing the content of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) – related project. While the project was challenging, it felt really rewarding to make a valuable contribution to our team.  During this fall, I have even had the opportunity to conduct market research that has supported top management in their decision making.

While my learning curve has certainly been steep, my colleagues have always been there to support me with any questions I might have. The people at Tieto have also been very keen upon hearing how we, the interns, would approach different challenges.

With 15,000 employees, Tieto offers an opportunity to build an invaluable professional network. For us recent graduates we have Tieto Young Professionals (TYP) that encourages us to make valuable connections and build a stronger team spirit. With TYP I have been able to join several events with other young professionals alike from different companies. But it is not only TYP that offers activities outside of work hours; I will for example also join in a course in HTML5-coding during this week. The course is held by employees that are keen on sharing their knowledge and passion for coding, and I am looking forward to learning from the best.

Having worked at Tieto for almost eight months now, I still feel the same enthusiasm towards my work; this is partly due to my challenging and versatile responsibilities, but mostly I have my colleagues who are located all over Europe to thank for that. At Tieto I have learned that by being self-driven and ambitious, I am able to acquire tasks that are challenging and fun to work with.

My six month intern period ended in the beginning of December and now it looks like I will be able to continue as a fulltime employee at Tieto. Whereas the reason for applying was the possibility to work in a large Nordic company – the reason I choose to stay here is because of the people that make me grow as young professional.

OP-Pohjola: Asiantuntijat eivÀt aina keksi parhaita innovaatiota, finanssialallakaan

TÀmÀ on osa työelÀmÀblogi sarjaa, jossa yritykset kertovat toimialoistaan, toiminnastaan ja työllistymismahdollisuuksistaan.

MistÀ parhaat tuotteet ja innovaatiot syntyvÀt? 

Vuosia sitten minulla oli etu ja ilo olla mukana kehittÀmÀssÀ mobiilipalveluita maailman suurimman mobiilivalmistajan palkkalistalla. Se oli hienoa, inspiroivaa aikaa tuotepÀÀllikölle. Saatoimme kokoontua pohtimaan tiiminÀ uusia ideoita ja aivoriihien lopussa tuloksena oli usein lÀjÀ uusia ominaisuuksia ja palveluita joita seuraavaksi kehitettÀisiin. MielestÀmme upeita sellaisia. 

Asiakkaat eivÀt kuitenkaan olleet aina samaa mieltÀ. Jotkin ominaisuuksista ja palveluista ovat perustellusti taaksepÀin katsottaessa insinöörien pÀivÀunia. 

Miksi tuotteet ja innovaatiot ovat vaikeita? Miten uusia palveluita luodaan? 

Sittemmin startup -maailmassa tuotteita rakennettuani on helppo löytÀÀ nöyryyttÀ sanoa, ettÀ yksikÀÀn suuri innovaatio ei ole syntynyt kokoushuoneessa kymmenien asiantuntijoiden kilvoitellessa parhaista ideoista. 

Suuret innovaatiot syntyvÀt halukkuudesta kuulla asiakasta, oikein. 

Asiakkaat eivĂ€t tietysti aina osaa kuvata ongelmiaan oikein. Muuan Steve Jobskin totesi sen parhaiten: “Ei ole asiakkaan tehtĂ€vĂ€ keksiĂ€ ratkaisuja”. Se on tuotteen rakentajan työ. Asiakkaat ja heidĂ€n tarpeidensa ymmĂ€rtĂ€minen ovat kuitenkin avain ratkaisujen löytĂ€miseen. Asiakkaat ovat aina absoluuttisen oikeassa omakohtaisten ongelmiensa ja haasteidensa suhteen, vaikka niitĂ€ voi olla joskus haastava artikuloida. 

On ollut siksi hienoa nÀhdÀ, ettÀ perinteinenkin toimija on huomannut asiakkaiden mielipiteiden tÀrkeyden uusia palveluja kehittÀessÀ. MeillÀ OP-Pohjolassa on panostettu viime vuosina asiakasymmÀrryksen lisÀÀmiseen ja sen myötÀ asiakaslÀhtöiseen suunnitteluun. Lean startup ja service design ovat kÀytÀnnössÀ koestettuja työkaluja, joiden avulla toivomme löytÀvÀmme parempia ratkaisuja arjen finanssiasioiden hallintaan. 

Case -esimerkki Pivo 

OP-Pohjola, Pivo

Pivo on tuote jota minulla on ollut ilo viedĂ€ eteenpĂ€in viimeisen puolentoista vuoden ajan OP-Pohjolassa. Pivo on mobiililompakko, jonka tehtĂ€vĂ€ on auttaa sen kĂ€yttĂ€jiĂ€ ymmĂ€rtĂ€mÀÀn kulutustaan paremmin – ja toisaalta auttaa hyödyntĂ€mÀÀn etuja, jotka kĂ€yttĂ€jĂ€lleen kuuluvat. Jonain pĂ€ivĂ€nĂ€ Pivolla myös maksetaan. 

Itse asiassa uskoimme projektia aloittaessamme, ettĂ€ ihan ensiksi ollakseen hyödyllinen Pivolla pitĂ€isi pystyĂ€ maksaa. Haastateltuamme satoja asiakkaita, ymmĂ€rsimme ettĂ€ maksaminen ei ole asiakkaidemme mielestĂ€ juuri nyt se suurin ongelma ostoksilla oltaessa. Paljon suurempi ongelma ostohetkellĂ€ oli yksinkertainen kysymys: “Onko minulla varaa ostaa tĂ€tĂ€ nyt?”. Siksi aloitimme ratkaisemalla tĂ€mĂ€n ongelman. 

Palautteen perusteella voidaan todeta, ettÀ Pivon tarjoamat ennusteet ja kulutuksen erittely toimialoittain auttaa asiakkaitamme todella arjessa.

Kaisa and Timo shared their stories about working at Vaisala as eLearning project manager and Scientist. Both of them originally joined Vaisala as Giant Leap interns and have continued their Vaisala path after the summer trainee program. Kick start to a career as a Giant Leap intern

Timo-ELK-180x252pxTimo: I have worked for Vaisala since June 2013; first as a Giant Leap intern, and currently as a scientist in sensor research of Controlled Environment business area. I studied physical chemistry as my major in the University of JyvÀskylÀ, and I started looking for job opportunities when I was about to graduate. I found out that Vaisala offered a R&D project similar to what I had done in my Thesis projects, concerning the development of next generation optical gas sensors. During the summer 2013 I made background research, measurements and computer simulations to get a better understanding of suitable solutions for a new sensor. As a scientist my work includes both research work and advising my team, so the expert role is becoming more and more significant in my position.

GL_KaisaKaisa: I work at Vaisala as a project manager in HR team, and I am responsible of our internal global e-learning network environment and it’s development. I already got to know Vaisala as a Giant Leap summer intern in 2011, when I developed a new concept for sales personnel orientation, which combines e-learning with face-to-face training. During that summer I worked closely with human resources, sales operations and Vaisala’s airport segment. I learned a lot, for example, about Vaisala’s business and customers, and I was able to develop my skills in project management and deepen my knowledge in

various HR processes, particularly concerning competence development. I also got to know the wonderful people, and learned a lot about my strengths and development areas, so I can sincerely recommend Giant Leap program.

Timo: Giant Leap was a learning experience for me; besides working with my project and learning a great deal, I got to know like-minded people who are active, motivated and take responsibility. I also got to know Vaisala on a larger scale through other interns’ projects, and gained more in-depth understanding of the company as a whole.

Right attitude, taking responsibility and readiness for changes more important than prior studies and work experiences

Timo: In the big picture, general knowledge learned through my studies has supported me a lot in my work. Yet, what is more important, is that as a university student you are able to take responsibility and look for further information and absorb it independently. This means that you can rely on your own competence, and you don’t have to know everything beforehand. When you are given challenging tasks, you are motived to study more, and you can also tell about your own areas of interest, which is part of Vaisala’s work culture.

Kaisa: In my current project manager’s position, I maintain and develop e-learning environment meant for Vaisala’s own internal use, as well as for representatives and for customer training. Working with different people, understanding the business environment in which we are operating, and coordinating the co-operation as smoothly as possible, are all integral part of my job. In my job it is also very important that you are ready for changes and want to do things in a different way.

Timo: The business oriented mindset is something which has taught me to think about the customer’s needs; when I understand the big picture and the decisions made in the strategic level, I am able to think out-of-the-box and concentrate on the problem based on the situation. It’s about using your common sense, while in the university you have to work in line with strict measurement rules.

Kaisa: I hold a master’s degree in adult education, and in addition I have studied the Finnish language and work psychology. I feel that in particular pedagogical studies and my previous work experience in HR and e-learning have given me competence for planning different training concepts and web-based tools. One of the most important things in my job is, however, the right kind of attitude; the desire to get things done and take ownership of what you are doing. Here in Vaisala, already as a young professional you are given challenging work assignments, if you are only willing to take responsibility.

Learning new while working with daily routines

Timo: My work days consist of performing measurements, analyzing results and working closely with my own team and R&D. Daily work for me is at the same time learning which happens constantly, while research work is continuous experimenting. Besides studying, I have also learned a lot outside my own expertise area by following my colleagues. Here at Vaisala on-the-job-learning is really encouraged, which is supported by the facilities with open-space-offices, and the low hierarchy among the employees. With a curious and proactive attitude you are able to succeed and also develop your competence to the direction you prefer.

Kaisa: My work days are very different, but typically my day includes a variety of meetings relating to the progress of projects, co-operation and communication with partners and experts from the various units, such as product managers. In my work, I have to be able to combine a wide range of information from different sources, and understand the nature of the organization in which we operate, and that what kind of resources there are available. My way is to do things as simply as possible, in order them to be effective. I also always try to think of things in terms of usability and on customer’s point of view. People from various educational backgrounds are able to work in this kind of position, as long as you are eager to learn new things, enjoy independent and challenging work, and stand behind your work!

Measuring the Zambian Climate with Vaisala’s HM40 meter

This blog post discusses the African climate that we endured during our 54-participant Aalto in Africa trip to Southern Africa. Our journey started with a one-week stay in the Zambian wilderness at the Kafue National Park. From there we continued to Victoria Falls in Livingstone and furthermore via Johannesburg to our final destination, Cape Town. Vaisala was generous enough to give us a Hand-Held Humidity and Temperature Meter HM40, which was used to measure the climate during our stay at the Chunga Scout Camp at Kafue.

The weather was not the first thing in my mind when we travelled to Southern Africa. Upon our arrival, it turned out to be rather an important factor in our daily lives, though. During our stay in Zambia, the sun was shining hot and bright twelve hours a day – this led us to take various precautions when protecting ourselves from the sun.

As opposed to Finnish seasons, Zambia has only three of them; the rainy, the hot dry and the cool dry seasons. The coldest time of the year is during the cool dry season which usually begins in May and lasts until August. This mainly corresponds to winter and the highest daily temperatures stay in the low end of 20’s (Celsius). Upon arrival of the hot dry season, the temperatures begin to rapidly rise and, between September and October, the temperatures stay in the 30’s. From November to April, the Zambian landscape is colored by rains and thunderstorms which cause the flora to blossom and everything gets green again.

Our visit to Zambia was dated at the end of the dry season. The Zambian savannah was extremely dry and at the same time, hot. The dry season is perhaps the best time to spot animals, since all of them have ascended to the Kafue river to drink. We spotted several elephant families near the river followed by impalas, lions, leopards and baboons. The river swarmed with hippos and crocodiles along with rich African bird flocks. Most of the African animals are nocturnal and stay in the shade for the most of the daytime. For example, the hippos ashore at night when they start their nightly dinner. Also leopards and lions prefer to capture their prey at night.

As did the animals feel more comfortable during the off-hours, so did we. The early few hours in the morning (from 6 to 8) felt comfortable, but after that the temperature started rising rapidly and soon reached its highest point which was around 35 degrees during our stay. This felt quite uncomfortable and usually led us to spend the hottest hours in the shade. Sun lotion and protective hats were commonly used under the burning sun. The most noticeable effect the dry air had was some participants’ occasional nose bleeds. The sun set unbelievably quickly followed by the rapidly cooling air.

Vaisala gave us a Hand-Held Humidity and Temperature Meter HM40 for our everyday measurement needs. As you can see from the measurements made with HM40, the daily temperature was at its highest around noon, when the sun was at the zenith. As stated above, also the relative humidity of the air was at its lowest at that time. For reference, the recommended relative humidity in households is around 25–55 percent.

 

P.S. We absolutely had to build a sauna in the savannah because – hey, why not? We were really looking forward to this since the day had been full of action including dusty safaris and exhausting workshops. The building process included a bunch of wooden poles and lots of plastic wrap we had bought with us from Finland. The poles acted as frames for the makeshift plastic wrap walls. For the sauna stove (kiuas), we used a turbostove that we had brought with us.

Everything seemed promising when we finally got to heat up the sauna; the temperature was rising steadily along with the sunset. Unfortunately, on the first cast of water to the hot rocks, we noticed that the whole building leaked like a sieve. Vaisala’s HM40 was also used to measure the temperature of our beloved hut. The highest measurement was somewhere around 37 degrees Celsius. Luckily our African guests didn’t care about the heat and wanted to bathe with us anyway.

Minne menet, koulutusvienti?

Lukukausimaksut ovat taas nousseet julkiseen keskusteluun, kun koulutusvientiÀ selvittÀneet työryhmÀt julkistivat alkukuusta työnsÀ hedelmÀt.

SYL:n ja SAMOKin asettama opiskelijoiden visiotyöryhmÀ katsoi pidemmÀlle tulevaisuuteen ehdottaessaan mm. virtuaalisen koulutusjÀrjestelmÀn luomista kuin opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön selvitysryhmÀ. OKM:n ryhmÀ esittÀÀ tavoitteekseen kansainvÀlisten opiskelijoiden mÀÀrÀn lisÀÀmisen samalla, kun se esittÀÀ suomalaisen koulutuksen houkuttelevuuden romuttamista lukukausimaksuilla. Aalto-yliopistossa vuosina 2011-2013 kÀynnissÀ olleessa lukukausimaksukokeilussa vain 6 % niistÀ, jotka olisivat joutuneet pulittamaan opinnoistaan tÀydet lukukausimaksut, otti lopulta opiskelupaikkansa vastaan. Kun lukuisat kyselyt (mm. Aallon opiskeijoiden keskuudessa toteutettu) osoittavat, ettÀ maksuttomuus on keskeinen houkutustekijÀ, tuntuu, ettÀ OKM:n asettaman työryhmÀn tavoitteet ovat tÀysin eri maailmasta aikaansaadun keinopaletin kanssa.

Lukukausimaksujen kannattajat haluavat vÀhentÀÀ maksujen huonoja puolia erilaisilla stipendijÀrjestelmillÀ. NÀmÀ jÀrjestelmÀt kuitenkin vain kierrÀttÀvÀt rahaa eri toimijoille, lisÀÀvÀt hallintoa ja kasvattavat yksittÀisten opiskelijoiden epÀvarmuutta tulevaisuudestaan. Ilman stipendejÀ taas lukukausimaksut erottelevat ihmiset varallisuuden perusteella oppimiskyvyn sijaan. KansainvÀlisten opiskelijoiden kouluttaminen maksaa jo nykyisellÀÀn itsensÀ takaisin opiskelijoiden kulutuksen ja töihin jÀÀvÀn yli 50 prosentin maksamien verojen kautta. Maksuttomuudesta hyödymme siis me kaikki!

Suomalaisen koulutuksen erityispiirteestÀ, maksuttomuudesta, tÀytyy pitÀÀ kiinni eikÀ taipua altavastaajaksi kilpailemaan maksullisilla koulutusmarkkinoilla. Tarvitsemme laadukasta ja kaikille maksutonta koulutusta, jotta selviÀmme maatamme tulevaisuudessa kohtaavista haasteista kuten kestÀvyysvajeesta. Eriarvoisuuden kasvattaminen ja uhkapelin pelaaminen Suomen vetovoimaisuudella ovat askelia, jotka uhkaavat romahduttaa kansainvÀlisten opiskelijoiden mÀÀrÀn Suomessa sen nostamisen sijaan. MeidÀn opiskelijoiden tÀytyy puolustaa koulutuksen tasa-arvoisuutta ja sen merkitystÀ kilpailukyvyn tuojana!
